LIBRARY PAINTING

Personal arms (without supporters) in gouache on art board using yellow for Or and white for Argent

from £400

As above on stained and lacquered timber or sprayed metal using durable enamel paint with gold and other metallic leaf

from £600

TABLE SHIELD

To be a simple shield shape such as a heater, spade or similar and have the shield of your arms repeated both sides. For a complex shape such as a tilting shield or a ship’s hull add £20 to cover the extra machining time. For a different second side of a badge or crest add (from) £40 to cover the extra time spent drawing, etc.

All table shields come in 3 parts, shield, pole and base, in a free black velvet bag sewn with a pocket for each.

from £380

WALL SHIELD

MDF

To be, again, simple smooth sided shapes. MDF examples about 14in x 11.5in of heaters and spade shields are usually in stock. Most complex shapes from history are possible but be aware that I use machine tools and do not carve so convex curves are possible, not concave.

from £500

Mahogany

A mahogany shield at this price will be about 6in x 7.5in or 7in x 8.5in according to the available plank widths. The higher price covers the cost of the hardwood, the extra machine shop time spent rounding over the face and the difficulty often encountered transferring a flat drawing onto a surface curving in two planes.

from £550

Full size in MDF

Full size shields are difficult items to quantify. Their sizes varied according to the age they were used, their country of origin, their purpose and their style. Tilting shields could be as small as 18in high, acting as much a target in the joust as a  defence. Others were so tall a crouching infantryman could hide behind them. This price is for a 2ft high heater or similar, which is the rough size of those used at Agincourt. This will be flat with rounded sides. For a curved version see below.

from £750

Full size in hardwood

To curve the face of a shield it is desirable to work with a hardwood and mahogany is the easiest to work. Machining the entire face of a thick sheet of MDF can make it prone to cracking or a crazing of the paint film over time, while plywood can delaminate. The timber has to be glued and pressure jointed by a subcontractor which adds about 3 months to the delivery time. It is difficult to speed this up.

HOUSE SIGNS

Quotes will be provided when a design has been agreed. I will need to know such things as material (external MDF, marine ply, hardwood, metal), some idea of shape, size, fixings, house number or name, which component of your arms you want used and whether this should be painted as part of the sign or added to it as a separately cut and painted item. The time and effort required to design the sign will be added to the quote as each sign is unique and needs to be thought out and drawn from scratch. This can vary from minutes to a couple of hours depending upon its complexity and the number of designs you require. If an order is not placed a charge will be made for the design time.

from £200

HATCHMENTS

Framed, appropriately painted background, single or marital arms and motto. Price dependent upon construction materials and size.

from £800

EXTRAS

Diapering can sometimes be incorporated into a shield, dependant upon the blazon. This is an extremely time consuming affair so expect to pay upwards of £150 extra for a wall or table shield. The final price will depend upon the design.

External use requires different timbers, paint finishes and treatment of the timber or metal. It may, however, only result in a small increase in cost.

Fixings  All wall shields come with fixings of your choice. If you have no preference they have sturdy screw eyes fixed to the back.

Multiple orders of the same arms or the same item placed at the same time will attract a discount.

Fixings  All items come with fixings of your choice. If you have no preference they have sturdy screw eyes fixed to the back. Large plaques and shields can be supplied with a chrome chain for hanging. House signs and hatchments usually have brass mirror plates for screwing to a wall.
