CHURCH HERALDRY

The finished Royal Arms in its home of the last three centuries.A Stuart Royal Arms from a church in Sherborne, Dorset, dating from 1671. The painting had deteriorated so badly by the 1950s that it was touched up by a local signwriter who had no feel for heraldry. His work had caused more damage as he had not had a sympathetic approach (note the lion’s head and the Scottish quarter) and it had deteriorated more quickly in 45 years than the original had done in over 320. The deterioration overall was so great and the original being of no great
artistic merit, it was agreed that it should be stripped back to bare wood and repainted from scratch, the frame being left untouched. A tracing was taken along with a series of close up photos which were blown up to the size of the original so that the new work could be as close to the original as possible whilst correcting the many mistakes. The completely restored and corrected painting. The original in need of complete restoration. The vast repository of heraldry within British and continental churches is generally protected from the elements but can still deteriorate over centuries. It is sometimes possible to repair rotten wood and treat old timber to preserve it. Lightly damaged paintings can be restored while badly deteriorated pieces are sympathetically repainted.

Old stone carvings can be repainted and gilded.

For each project I work from a series of close up photographs to ensure my work matches the original and I study the heraldry, style and techniques used at the time of its painting.

Timber, metal and stone can be worked on. Other materials such as canvas, fabric and glass are the province of other specialists.

I am happy to work in close liaison with a restoration team or the clerk of works. When necessary I will schedule my work to fit in with your fundraising.
