The number of full time heraldic artists in the world is very small, and most of them work for their countriesí heraldic authorities. To use these you generally have to go through a herald, so you have no direct contact and often no choice in who is used. Freelance artists are even fewer in number, but when you find one whose style you like, you have a chance to influence the work you commission directly. Most artists in this field are trained to work in gouache on paper and vellum, like illustrators. Of this small number only a tiny handful worldwide have mastered the art of working with and painting on wood and other media.

On this site you will see samples of the work of one of Britainís leading exponents of this challenging art form, a small selection of 20 years of professional work. Many of the ideas and items shown are unique to this artist, who experiments and innovates as much as he can.

Even if you have no coat of arms of your own and are only here to browse, please enjoy these images. Do not be put off by thinking that heraldry is the exclusive province of the aristocratic or the fabulously wealthy, as it is not. Thousands have inherited arms from their predecessors while many countries are unregulated and citizens are free to adopt the arms of their choice.
